Overview
The Kansas Biological Survey conducts basic and applied research, provides statewide and regional monitoring and mapping services, and supports a broad-based educational outreach program.
Divisions.
KBS activities are distributed across 3 divisions: Water Resources, Land & Wildlife Resources, and Information Technologies. The combined efforts of the divisions represent a broad spectrum of focus areas within the natural science discipline. Division staff collaborate on projects and share their expertise and research resources with one another, commonly working across divisions.
Research Support Units.
There are 5 permanent research units that support the efforts of division staff. Each unit provides unique staff expertise, equipment, laboratory or field facilities, and other research resources. Our research units are also a rich source of training and education opportunities for master's and doctorate-level graduate students at the University of Kansas.
Special Programs and Centers.
KBS faculty and staff often receive grants or special
contracts, of varying duration (e.g. 2 - 5 years), to conduct research on
a particular problem or within a specific area of interest. The special
programs and centers created by these grants or contracts are also important
resources for KBS researchers and the communities they serve.
