Assessing changes in respiration and carbon substrate usage with warming in multiple ecosystems

How will varied terrestrial ecosystems function in a warmer climate? To explore how carbon return to the atmosphere from soils will proceed in the future, we are assessing soil respiration and the isotopic composition of that CO2 in soils from multiple ecosystems across North America. We are using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance to assess how carbon substrate usage differs with varying temperature, to link respiration responses to microbial function in these soils.
